New Business/Information:

The By-laws update:

  • Secretary/treasurer position: shall be defined as separate identities.  The fourth year student representative shall be dually appointed as the secretary.
  • Members and officers:  to be clarified.  Student representatives and the state representative shall be defined as voting members.
  • Committees:  to be defined.  As a non-profit organization, our audit committee needs to be active.  Bill Fassett suggested assigning Brandy Singer, Jason Wicklund, and Doug Crafton to be members of this committee.  A communications committee will also need to be established for e-mail database and technological management.  Doug Crafton has been working with Marguerite Villars to keep this updated.  Colleen Terriff noted that there is duplication of efforts and that this process may need to be evaluated and streamlined.  Brandy Singer will investigate.  A CE/Program committee was also suggested.  Brandy Singer and Michael Brandt will be the primary members.
  • Colleen also suggested a review of the by-laws for consistency.
  • Minor comments shall be forwarded to Bill Fassett and he will revise and distribute an updated By-laws for review at the next SPA board meeting.

The SPA board members were invited to attend the Washington State Board of Pharmacy meeting on April 17th to exchange ideas or concerns in an open forum environment.  To date Bill Fassett, Michelle Sodorf, Brandy Singer, Travis Sonnett and Brenda Bray have agreed to attend.  We intend to send a blastfax to invite SPA member input for ideas or concerns.

Jason Wicklund requested input from the SPA board on venues, organizations to donate to, and fundraising ideas for the cocktail/social party.  SPA will request member input for preferences via the newsletter.  He reviewed ideas on the date for it to be held.  Late August or September was the conclusion to provide opportunity for student involvement and to avoid conflict with other meetings or events such as the Northwest Pharmacy Convention in May/June and the Annual Banquet in November.  Brandy Singer encouraged consideration of options for attendee tax write offs.  Ehren Wainwright accepted the raffle kit from Marguerite Villars for fundraising purposes.

CE Update:

April 10th, United Health Care is providing CE at the Double Tree Hotel in downtown Spokane. As this is not an SPA funded event, there is no charge even for non-SPA members.  This month, April, a presentation on dementia is expected.  A CE in May will be on osteoporosis by Josh Neumiller.  In June, CE on smoking cessation by Terri Levien and a discussion on side effects of behavior modification medications by Brandy Singer will be presented.  Michael Brandt will be providing a CE lecture on DVT (tentative) and Dr. Greeley and others may be providing a CE on movement disorders as well.  Details are continuing to be completed.  Travis Sonnett will be attending the board meeting in May and on an “as possible” basis thereafter.  Brandy Singer and Bill Fassett will investigate providing an e-mail reminder to those individuals that RSVP’d to attend CE.  This reminder is intended to allow those that respond in favor of attending and then cannot to opt out and make room for others and to decrease the relatively high absentee rate to CE events.

Membership Update:

Michelle Sodorf informed the board of the success of the online dues sign up in conjunction with WSPA.  31 members utilized this option and were allowed to pay with credit card as a result.  Marguerite Villars reported reception of the check from WSPA for the dues and expected receipt for any activity every three months. Michelle Sodorf will be drafting a letter, for those members opposed to e-mail communication, to remind past members that have not renewed their membership that is not to late to do so.

Note: Next meeting - date change - May 6th, 7-8am at Frankie Doodle's

Personal Note: As this is my last SPA board meeting, I want to thank the board for working so hard to make ths organization better.   Laurel Cox
