SPA BOARD MEETING MINUTES
May 6, 2008

Present:

Michael Brandt, Brenda Bray, Bill Fassett, Rebecca Hille (Guest – WA BOP Chair), Brandy Singer, Michelle Sodorf, Travis Sonnett, Colleen Terriff, Marguerite Villars, Ehren Wainwright, and Miriam Wilson. Absent: Jason Wicklund Minutes from 4/8/08 were adjusted and approved.

New Business/Information:

  • The SPA Constitution update:
    • Associate Membership is defined as any individual, not a pharmacist, who subscribes to the purposes and objectives of the SPA is eligible for associate membership.
    • Active Members are voting members and includes Pharmacists, Student Pharmacists and Technicians in good standing with the SPA Board.
    • The SPA Board shall consist of ten members and include two student members and a WSPA Regional Representative.
    • The Secretary position will be selected from the student pharmacist members of the board. The non-secretary student representative shall assume the duties of the Secretary in his/her absence.
    • Amendments may be voted upon annually by mail or e-mail ballot.
    • The SPA Board has made Dr. Fassett responsible for revisions of the language of the SPA Constitution accordingly.
  • The SPA By-laws revision will be discussed at the next meeting.
  • Ehren Wainwright has been selected to serve a term as Secretary of the SPA Board.
  • The Blastfax charge policy is under debate. There will be a distinction made between commercial and non-profit use of Blastfax. Non-profit use will be at no charge, but must be approved first before sending. At this time the SPA president will be responsible for screening what is sent via Blastfax until a screening process is created and implemented. The charge for commercial use of the Blastfax will be considered at the next meeting.

CE Update:

May 7th Josh Neumiller is providing a CE at Luigi’s in downtown Spokane on the “Considerations for the Treatment of Osteoporosis in 2008”. Other upcoming CE events in May include a talk on DVT prophylaxis and Stroke Prevention by Michael Brandt. For June there are talks planned on new treatment options for smoking cessation by Terri Levien, as well as a program on the treatment of adverse reactions associated with atypical antipsychotic use by Brandy Singer. Specific dates, times, and locations for these CE programs are TBA at this time. Travis Sonnett finalized his resignation as the SPA CE Chair as he moves into his new faculty position at WSU College of Pharmacy in Pullman. Special thanks to Travis and his commitment as the SPA CE Chair.

Technician Update:

A law lunch update was provided for pharmacy technicians at Sacred Heart Medical Center on 4/16/08.  Another update is in the planning stages for Deaconess Medical Center pharmacy technicians. Colleen Terriff is assisting Miriam Willson with the logistics.  Dr. Bill Fassett has written a quick review of Washington laws and regulations affecting Pharmacy Technician practice. WSPA Update:

The 2008 Northwest Pharmacy Convention is approaching. Join pharmacy professionals from all over the Pacific Northwest from May 29 – June 1 at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. The SPA is hoping for a strong turnout from its members and representation at this event. The SPA has agreed to sponsor a selected Pharmacist, Student Pharmacist, and Pharmacist Technician to attend the event.
