SPA Board Minutes May 12, 2009

Present:

Michael Brandt, Brenda Bray, Cris DuVall, Bill Fassett, Michael Glockling, Rebecca Hille, Sue Marchi Kellogg, Brandy Singer, Marguerite Villars, and Ehren Wainwright

Absent:

Andrew Harbison, Michelle Sodorff, and Colleen Terriff

Meeting called to order at 7AM by SPA President, Brenda Bray. Minutes from April 14, 2009 will be amended and approved via e-mail.

Action/Discussion Items:

Official Transition of Paper to Electronic Documents

  • Marguerite Villars will pass all SPA paper records onto Michelle Sodorff in June.
  • Documents such as the checkbook and membership records will be transferred to an electronic system by President Brenda Bray and a group of selected committee members.
  • This is in preparation for Marguerite’s retirement as SPA Treasurer.

Event Brite Scheduling for June CE Program

  • RSVP’s for CE will be available via Event Brite only.
  • The board motioned that e-mail and phone RSVP’s for CE will not be accepted any longer.

ASHP Student Society Grant (ASHP “Seed Grant”)

  • Chair member Michael Brandt spoke out about the grant application from information he had received in an e-mail. The grant application is available to strengthen an existing ASHP chapter or to develop official ASHP recognition within a chapter.
  • A college of pharmacy may apply for $500 in grant money and an additional $250 may be requested if applying jointly with the state affiliate health-system pharmacy organization.
  • The grant application is due by May 30 and the board believes that a case for the grant application could be made by next year’s deadline.
  • Michael will e-mail the SPA Student Representatives some information about the grant to stimulate discussion before the next meeting.

Follow-up:

House of Charity Community Involvement

  • Brenda Bray has made contact with a retired pharmacist interested in being a touch point coordinator for pharmacy services at the House of Charity.
  • Sean Dobbins will visit the organization to discuss pharmacy related needs and Michelle Sodorff will report back at the next meeting.

Board Member Biographies

  • All biographies have been received and will be given to Sharon Fassett to be posted to the SPA web-site.

SPA Drug Alerts – Member Input Update

  • The board discussed how sending a drug alert is very time consuming and can be a liability if used inappropriately.
  • Brenda and Member Sue Marchi Kellogg will develop and send a Blast Fax notification requesting membership feedback on the issue.
  • Sue reported that some members have expressed interest in receiving an emergency alert with regards to specific information such as a stolen prescription blank.

Pharmacy Technician Student Status

  • SPA By-Laws need to be re-worded. This will be an agenda item for the June meeting.

Committee Reports:

Finance committee:

  • Report through March was provided by SPA chair Michelle Sodorff via e-mail.
  • Please direct questions to Michelle or discuss at the next board meeting.

Membership update report provided by Marguerite Villars.

  • There are 200 members recorded for 2009.
  • New graduates recruited during the SPA Student Luncheon will be added to the membership for 2009.

Annual Awards Banquet committee report provided by Brandy Singer

  • Scheduled for November 4, 2009 at the Spokane Club.
  • Brandy is requesting input from the board on potential CE presentations for the banquet.

CE committee report reminder provided by SPA chair Michael Brandt

  • May 28-31 NW Pharmacy Convention; Coeur d’Alene, ID
  • June 24th & 25th: New Agents to Treat Diabetes; Keith Campbell
  • November 4th Annual Awards Banquet; Spokane Club

Student Update provided by Ehren Wainwright

  • Student representative Andrew Harbison mailed out around 50 letters requesting donations for the SPA Student Scholarship.
  • Marguerite has received a handful of responses to these letters in the SPA P.O. Box.
  • Andrew will report back on how this is going at the next meeting.

WSPA/Statewide Update provided by Cris DuVall

  • Reminder that NW Pharmacy Convention is approaching!

WA BOP Update provided by Rebecca Hille

  • BOP has a new executive director.

Pharmacy Technician Update provided by Lori Ruff

  • Lori is requesting feedback from technicians about CE interests.

Other Business:

Honorarium to Pharmacy Residents

  • The board motioned to give a $100 honorarium to each Pharmacy Resident for their time at the SPA Residency Showcase in support of their travel to the Western States Residency Conference.
