Welcome to the SPA Technician’s Corner

This is a special place for Pharmacy Technicians. Did you know that the Board of Pharmacy now licenses more Pharmacy Technicians than Pharmacists? It’s true! You are an important part of Pharmacy and of the Spokane Pharmacy Association. Let us know what kinds of features you’d like in this space.

April, 2010

by Lori Ruff, SPA Tecnician Representative

Hi Techs!

We made it through the first of the year and Spring is around the corner.  Interesting things are happening in pharmacy.  Starting April 1, 2010, the new Prior Auth form has to be typed and faxed to DSHS.  See the numbered memo on the DSHS website.  Starting July 1, 2010 the new tamper resistant Rx pads must be used for all retail prescriptions except for electronic, telephoned, or faxed orders.  For more information you can go the SPA or the WSPA website.

I am working on a Technician Day for October.  Some of the topics I am thinking about are Heart Disease, Diabetes, and The American Cancer Society to explain the resources they have to offer our patients.  If you want something different, let me know.

Char and Erik are working hard on planning a Tech Day on the west side of the mountains.  I will let you know when it will be.

The Northwest Pharmacy Convention will be on June 3-6, 2010 in Couer D’Alene. If there is a Tech Roundtable, I will let you know.

Are you involved with a charity or planning a event?  Please let me know.  I would love to tell the other Techs about it.  Owl Pharmacy and the Rxers (6th Ave. Pharmacy) Relay teams are gearing up for their Relay in May.  We plan to have lots of fun.  Our Relay theme is “Movies in the Making.”  I think there will be lots of stars there.  Come out to Cheney on May 14th to cheer us on.  We would like your support.

You can reach me at mushukitty@centurytel.net or lori@owlpharmacy.com. I would love to hear from you.

Good Luck
Lori

A Community Pharmacy Technician’s Role in Reducing Medication Errors

Pharmacy technicians play a major role in community pharmacy practice. The pharmacist relies on the technician to provide an extra layer of safety. It is important for technicians to follow system-based processes and inform the pharmacist when these processes do not work or are unmanageable. See full article...
